On January 5th, DC Comics made history.

For the first time in Batman’s 82-year publishing history, their mainstream superhero universe featured a Black man in the role of the Dark Knight with the publication of “The Next Batman”.

Written by John Ridley, screenwriter of “12 Years A Slave” and the ABC television series “American Crime”, the introduction story with the new Batman was among DC Comics’ most publicized events in 2020. On May 25, 2020, a 46-year-old Black man named George Floyd was killed during a brutal, forceful apprehension by Minneapolis Police officers. The following day, video footage of Floyd’s killing was widely distributed through social media, and the first of many protests nationwide began that night.

America reached a boiling point, and the overflow spilled into the businesses of various global industries and corporations.

The American comic book industry was no exception.
